What To Watch This Weekend: Overwatch, League of Legends' Summer Finals, and More

Before the fall season of tournaments and events can begin, we need the summer season to wrap up. And with two big tournaments happening this weekend and more on the way, it seems like we’ll be getting a longer goodbye than usual.

First, The League of Legends Championship Series’ Summer Playoff Finals start today. In North America, Immortals faces Counter Logic Gaming in a best-of-five showdown to decide third place after both teams were eliminated last week. Tomorrow, the teams that beat them, Cloud 9 and Team Solo Mid, will fight for the top spot. (Schedule / Stream)

In Europe’s Summer Playoffs, H2K-Gaming will fight Unicorns of Love (which is a great team name) for third place, while G2 Esports fights Splyce for first. (Schedule / Stream)

If you’re not a MOBA person, you can hop over to the last couple days of the Overwatch Open instead, where some of the best teams in Europe and North American will fight for an enormous $300,000 prize pool. (Schedule / Stream)

If you are a MOBA person but like your viewing angle a little lower, the group stage of the Smite Pro League continues today, with a total of eight high-level matches happening this weekend. (Schedule / Stream)

If you’ve made your final decision and are definitely not a MOBA person, there’s lots fighting game events going on this weekend. Perhaps the biggest of the bunch is Absolute Battle 7 in Texas, which is not only the next stop on Capcom’s Pro Tour, but will feature several other games as well. (Schedule / Stream). A few other tournaments will also take place in Brazil, Argentina, and Austrailia this weekend.

If you’re not a classic fighting game person, then maybe this year’s Super Smash Bros. Shine tournament might be a little more up your alley. (Schedule / Stream)

If you’re not a competitive person at all, then you can relax and enjoy the United Kingdom’s biggest gaming event, Insomnia, without having to worry about who to cheer for (there will be some tournaments there, though. You’ve been warned). (Schedule / Stream)

Looking ahead to next weekend, we have PAX West, which will have something for any kind of gamer, the Call of Duty XP event, and fighting game tournament East Coast Throwdown. Notice any big tournaments we missed? Let us know in the comments.
