Star Wars: Battlefront II, the newest multiplayer shooter from Electronic Arts, has already earned the publisher an ignoble distinction: Having the least-liked comment in 24 hours on social media site Reddit.
Over the weekend, Battlefront II entered early access on the company’s EA Access subscription on PC and Xbox One, which lead to fans being unhappy with the way rewards are doled out in the game. Particularly, heroes like Darth Vader are locked behind fairly tremendous amounts of credits which can take players hours to attain. In the Battlefront subreddit, user MBMMaverick asked “Seriously? I paid $80 and have Vader locked?”
This lead to a response from user EACommunityTeam, an account associated with the publisher.
“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes,” said EACommunityTeam. “As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay. We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets. Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.”
EA and DICE have said they are adjusting the lootboxes in Battlefront II, but presumably the EA Access version reflects those changes already.
Fans did not much like that response and began downvoting en masse. At the time of writing, it sits at around negative 380,000 points, which could be balanced out by upvotes and thus the actual downvote count could be higher than the point total shows. For comparison, the next lowest point total on the site is negative 24,000 and that was the poster asking for downvotes to set a record, which has now been smashed.
Star Wars: Battlefront II releases on November 17 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
